Art on Steel designs and sells laser-cut steel house numbers, locally made in South Africa and powder-coated for South African sun and rain. Sign designs run from a compact 220 x 300mm plate up to a 2175 x 626mm XL for estate entrances, and start at R699. Individual Modern and Bold digits start at R239 and R249 each. Every number is made to order, not pulled off a shelf.

Which house number style should I choose?

Art on Steel's house numbers fall into a few families. Pick by the space you have and the look you want. AOS18, AOS9 and the Modern digits are among the best sellers.

• Horizontal signs for gate posts and wall panels: AOS4, AOS18, AOS13 and AOS7.
• Taller, narrower signs for pillars and vertical wall space: AOS22, AOS1 and AOS14.
• Square signs: AOS23 and AOS24.
• Tree designs: AOS3, AOS4, AOS8 and AOS20.
• Nature and animal designs: AOS15 (bee), AOS17 (horse), AOS19 (owl) and AOS25 Horizontal (African map).
• Decorative designs: AOS14, AOS16, AOS21 and AOS22.
• Large-format signs for estate entrances and bigger properties: AOS2, AOS10 and AOS16.
• Individual digits (0–9), mixed to match any address, in black or white mild steel or brushed stainless steel: Modern and Bold.

Every sign starts as a flat sheet of 2mm mild steel, laser-cut to keep the edges of each digit sharp and the proportions consistent across every size. After cutting, each piece is powder-coated rather than painted, because powder coat bonds to the metal under heat and paint chips. Black orders get a Ferrograin finish, a textured coat that hides fingerprints and small scratches better than a flat gloss. White orders get a smooth powder coat for a cleaner, more architectural look. The Modern and Bold digit ranges are also available in brushed stainless steel, which resists corrosion on its own.

Every piece is made to order. Standard designs are produced within 2 weeks, while personalised house numbers are custom orders that take up to 6 weeks, because dispatch waits for your approval of a final drawing. Each batch is laser-cut, powder-coated, and quality-checked by Art on Steel's South African manufacturing partners before it ships. That is slower than a mass importer, and it is deliberate: steel that has been properly prepped and coated survives a Cape winter or a Highveld hailstorm. Reviewers regularly mention how well the finish holds up.

Delivery is free on orders over R2,000. Under that, it is R140 in Gauteng and R160 for the rest of South Africa. Couriers deliver nationwide, including Cape Town and Durban. After dispatch, allow 1–2 working days to Pretoria, 2–3 to main centres, 2–5 to regional areas, and 5–7 to remote areas.

FAQ

What are Art on Steel house numbers made of? Each sign is laser-cut from 2mm mild steel and finished in a black Ferrograin or smooth white powder coat built for South African sun and rain. The Modern and Bold digit ranges are also available in brushed stainless steel.

Are steel house numbers safe outdoors in South Africa, including coastal areas? Yes. Powder coating protects against sun and rain, and an occasional rinse with fresh water removes coastal salt build-up. Brushed stainless steel digits resist corrosion on their own. For a coastal installation, email info@artonsteel.co.za to discuss options before ordering.

How long does it take to get a house number made and delivered? Standard designs are produced within 2 weeks. Personalised house numbers are custom orders and take up to 6 weeks, depending on how quickly you approve the final drawing. Courier delivery after dispatch takes 1–7 working days depending on your area.

Can I personalise my house number? Yes. Sign designs are personalised with your house number and street name, which makes them custom orders: you approve a drawing first, with up to 3 rounds of changes at no extra cost. The Modern and Bold ranges are sold as individual digits, one digit per number in your address.

What sizes do the house numbers come in? Most designs come in four sizes, from as small as 220 x 300mm up to XL sizes such as 2175 x 626mm. A few designs, such as AOS6 and AOS16, come in two or three sizes. Each product page lists its exact sizes and prices.

What is the return policy? Returns are accepted within 14 days for an exchange or store credit, and a 7% fee may apply to cash or EFT refunds. Custom and personalised house numbers cannot be cancelled or refunded once the order is placed, because the designer is engaged and paid straight away.
